Family Travel Dreams, Adventures….. and Reality
I'd seen it on maps but I'd never really heard much about Great Basin. What exactly was it famous for? Listed as one of the 10 least-visited national parks in the US, this sounded like the ideal remote experience for 2020 quarantine camping! So, I penciled it into our itinerary. It was the perfect way to break up our drive from Utah to Crater Lake and explore what this corner of Nevada had to offer.
Steep drops, no guardrails, zero shoulder, saddles at the top of passes, steep grades, warning signs.... all while pulling a trailer. Hello fear of heights, I thought I had left you far behind but then you found me in the Southwest!
Towering sandstone cliffs provide respite from the intense Utah sun while the streambed twists and turns deeper into the canyon. Little Wildhorse Canyon is a slot canyon for all hiking abilities... and one that will be remembered long after the heat of summer becomes a distant memory.
The hoodoos of Bryce Canyon have to be one of my favorite landforms on Earth. Their uniqueness that formed over the last 20,000 years through "frost wedging" (freezing and thawing of these plateaus that were carved over the last 6 million years) never ceases to amaze me. Contrasting redish-pink sandstone, deep blue skies, and emerald green vegetation transports you to another planet. But, it is simply another of Utah's jaw-dropping natural wonders!
As we pulled into Fruita Campground, spotting deer and marmots all along the drive, sunset provided a phenomenal introduction to Capitol Reef. The way the rays play on the different colors in the landscapes brings hues out that are not visible in the heat of the day.
